The Gironde department owes its name to the estuary that originates after the confluence of the Dordogne and Garonne at the mouth of Ambès, downstream of Bordeaux. From 1793 to 1795 it was called the department of Bec-d’Ambès.
The Gironde is the largest department in metropolitan France (9,975.6 km²) and the second largest after Guyana (83,846 km²).
The Gironde is composed of three distinct entities, with a historical legacy of their own:
The Gironde is part of the New Aquitaine region. It is bordering the departments of Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, Dordogne and Charente-Maritime.
In the south-east of the department, on land slightly higher than the plateau of the Landes, the country Bazadais is installed. Between the valley of the Garonne and that of Ciron, this group is bordered by the Landes forest in the southwest, but stands out clearly from this landscape.
Although very forest, the Bazadais is covered with numerous clearings cultivated, implanted on reliefs with the sweet undulations, and the maritime pine gives way to the oak. Grasslands and cereal crops dominate, associated with some orchards and rare vines. To the north, a large flat and openfield terrace overlooks the river.
Cultures, reliefs and mixed leafy and pine forests make up varied landscapes here.
An exceptional landscape near the Landes forest, distinctly different from its imposing neighbor, the Bazadais itself is home to two distinct configurations.
Indeed, slightly overlooking the Garonne on the left bank, the terrace of Bazadais has a very horizontal relief, covered with crops on large surfaces; set back, the hills of Bazadais proper offer more undulations and welcome more afforestation.
The town of Marions (1,630 hectares) sinks deeply into the Great Lande, towards Lerm-et-Musset. His name gave rise to contradictory etymological explanations. Irrigated by the brooks of Barthos and Chantemerle, tributaries of Ciron, and by their tributaries, it presents a dispersed habitat, with numerous isolated farms and places known as: Chibauchey.
Gavachey, Narcam, Les Monges, Charlatan, Ponchet, Jougla … The banks of the streams, low and clayey, are sometimes occupied by poplar plantations. From Grignols, one reaches the village by the D 655 e2 road which slips, narrow and tortuous, between the meadows and the fields of maize.
The agricultural vocation of the commune is diversified: cultivation of cereals and asparagus, production of fodder, rearing of calves under the mother, capons and fat ducks, logging for lumber and heating.
